Education is set to play a pivotal role in catapulting India into the league of developed nations. This was the resounding message delivered by the Honorable President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, during the two-day Conference of Directors of National Institutes of Technology (NITs) held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The conference, which concluded on October 30, 2014, was convened to outline a roadmap for achieving excellence in education and advancing India’s knowledge economy.

Key Highlights from the President’s Address:

  • Transformative Power of Education: The President emphasized that education will be the single biggest factor in establishing India as a knowledge society and achieving its national vision of excellence.
  • Innovation and Industry Collaboration:
    • 23 NITs now host innovation clubs.
    • 24 NITs have established industry cells.
    • 8 NITs have set up technology incubators.
    • 12 NITs have created IPR funds to support patent filings, with more initiatives expected in the coming months.

Social Responsibility Initiatives:

To drive holistic development, the President urged every NIT to adopt five villages under schemes like:

  • Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana
  • Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana
  • Swachh Bharat Mission
  • Digital India Programme

Notable efforts include:

  • NIT Jamshedpur working with seven villages.
  • NIT Uttarakhand collaborating with 20 villages.
  • NIT Jaipur supporting five villages.

Recognition and Inspiration:

The President announced the expansion of the In-Residence Programme at Rashtrapati Bhavan:

  • 30 young scholars, one from each NIT, will be invited as guests for a week.
  • Six doctoral or post-doctoral students will serve as team leaders.

Strengthening Curriculum and Research:

Upcoming workshops:

  • NIT Surathkal: November workshop on “Learning from Each Other.”
  • NIT Warangal: December workshop on “Common Guidelines for Curriculum.”

The President also highlighted the need to:

  • Provide special support to NITs in the North East for rapid development.
  • Create a database of foreign educational experts and Persons of Indian Origin to fill vacant faculty positions.

Recommendations from the Conference:

The Directors of NITs proposed several forward-looking initiatives:

  1. Enhancing Research:
    • Introduce the position of Research Professors with sufficient funding.
    • Launch an Annual Research Summit with awards for best innovations.
  2. Leveraging Technology:
    • Increase access to high-quality education through virtual classrooms and MOOCs.
    • Optimize the use of the National Knowledge Network and ICT-based education initiatives.
  3. International Collaboration:
    • Establish an inter-NIT platform for global cooperation.
    • Nominate an International Cooperation Officer in each NIT to strengthen linkages.
    • Explore MOUs with international universities for collaborative research and faculty exchanges.
  4. Faculty Development:
    • Develop a comprehensive training plan for faculty at all levels.

Vision for the Future:

The conference underscored the importance of education as a transformative tool. Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani, Union Minister for Human Resource Development, joined the concluding session, reinforcing the government’s commitment to fostering excellence in education.
